Inspiring Future Innovators

Updated: May 5

On April 29, 2025, the University of Patras welcomed 45 students from the 2nd and 3rd grades of the 7th Vocational High School – 1st Laboratory Center of Patras (Department of Agriculture) for an inspiring educational experience.

🐛 Bridging Education and Sustainability

As part of the Erasmus+ initiative EntoFARM – "Promoting Circular Economy Strategies through Open Source Insect Farm Technology among School Children", the visit aimed to raise environmental awareness and ignite curiosity about sustainable agricultural practices through hands-on learning.

Hosted by the Department of Agriculture at the School of Agricultural Sciences in Messolonghi, the day offered students an opportunity to:

  • Tour the department’s cutting-edge facilities, including the pilot insect rearing unit.

  • Engage with researchers and university students, exploring real-world applications of agricultural science.

  • Discover the power of insect farming as a sustainable solution to global food security and waste reduction.

🎓 Knowledge Sharing by Passionate Experts

The students were welcomed by Assistant Professor Dr. Christos Rumbos, who introduced the EntoFARM project and its vision for a greener future. Presentations by Mr. Ioannis Markou, PhD candidate, and Ms. Georgia-Anna Tzouda, undergraduate researcher, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of insect farming — from alternative protein production to environmental conservation.

🧪 Hands-On Learning

Interactive sessions included close encounters with edible insect species such as the yellow mealworm, black soldier fly, lesser mealworm, and superworm. Students explored the basic principles of setting up and operating an insect farm, and learned about the nutritional value of insect-based food products.

🌍 Building a More Sustainable Tomorrow

The event not only demystified the science behind insect farming but also sparked interest in agricultural, environmental, and biotechnological careers. It showcased how practical, engaging STEM education can empower young learners to become stewards of sustainability.
